Studies of the Growth-promoting Activity for Chicks of Fish Solubles.

چکیده
The presence of unidentified growth factors in fish solubles has been postulated for more than a decade (Sunde, Cravens, Elvehjem & Halpin, 1950; Fuller, Carrick & Hauge, 1952; Lillie, Sizemore & Bird, 1953). During this period several attempts have been made to fractionate and concentrate the active constituents (Menge, Denton, Sizemore, Lillie & Bird, 1953; Mason, Sacks & Stephenson, 1961 ; Steinke, Bird & Strong, 1963) but so far they remain uncharacterized. We report here the results of our investigations, done over several years, into the growth-promoting effects of herring solubles.

Interrelationship between the growth-promoting effect of fish solubles and the gut flora of the chick.
I. The effect of dietary fish solubles on the growth and gut weight of conventional and germ-free chicks and of chicks given potentially growth-depressing agents present in the excreta was investigated. 2. Fish solubles significantly increased the growth of conventional but not of germ-free chicks. Oral administration of fresh, but not autoclaved, droppings depressed the growth of chicks hatche...
متن کاملA Review of the Chemical and Nutritive Properties of Condensed Fish Solubles
This paper attempts to review some of the pertinent data available on the chemical and nutritive properties of condensed fish solubles with special reference to condensed menhaden solubles. Information concerning other kinds of fish solubles from various published sources is tabulated for comparison. The results of three analytical and three biological studies of menhaden solubles are reported....
متن کاملSome properties of an unidentified chick growth factor found in condensed fish solubles.
In previous papers (1,2) evidence was presented to show that condensed fish solubles produced a marked increase in the growth rate of chicks on diets containing an adequate level of vitamins and essential amino acids. Berry, Carrick, Roberts, and Hauge (3) found that a water extract of fish solubles was also active in stimulating the growth of chicks. Very little other information on the proper...
متن کاملUNIDENTIFIED FACTORS REQUIRED BY LACTOBACILLUS CASEI* IV. EVIDENCE FOR TWO GROWTH FACTORS IN PURIFIED LIVER EXTRACTS BY LOUISE J. DANIEL,t
Scott, Norris, and Heuser (1) and Daniel, Scott, Heuser, and Norris (2) reported that the unknown growth-promoting activity in several natural products for LactobaciUua casei was multiple in nature. The latter investigators proposed the existence of two unknown factors as an explanation for the wide variations in response to different antipernicious anemia liver extracts obtained with L. casei ...
متن کاملImmunostimulatory and growth-promoting potential of poly-β-hydroxybutyrate in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fingerlings culture
In the current study, the effect of dietary supplementation of poly-β-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) on growth performance, digestive enzymes activity, body composition, non-specific immune response and diseases resistance of rainbow trout fingerlings were investigated. Five hundred and fifty-two healthy fingerlings (8.2±1.0 g) were randomly distributed in 12 tanks (150 L) at a density of 46 fish/ tank ...
